This is the home of so much history. Some of the best moments in American history have happened in this part of the nation. There have also been some darker points in history that have played out in Georgia. While in the area, you can (and should) the traces of the Antebellum south as well as the Civil Rights history. The Civil Rights Era, in particular, was a time of great turmoil and violence in this part of the state. The area was significant in the Civil War, as well, but the 1950s and 1960s saw a great deal of unrest in Leesburg and the surrounding communities. A store was bombed in the uptown area of nearby Americus in 1957 and MLK, Jr. spent a night in the city’s jail 4 just years later. Though this history is unfortunate, it is still valuable to understand what happened and be aware of how American culture has changed. Towns like these give you the opportunity to do that.
